Meet Dr. Meyer

Practicing orthopedic and spine surgeon, author, humanitarian and inventor of yur brace.

“I’ve had multiple back surgeries myself. Experience on both sides of the table taught me something simple: the support you need when you’re lifting a box is not the support you need when you’re sitting for two hours. Most braces ask you to pick one and live with it. yur brace lets you decide as you need it.”

Why we built it

Dr. Meyer has spent his career treating spines. After multiple back surgeries of his own, he has also spent a good part of it wearing the same braces he prescribes.

That is where the idea started. Every brace he tried made one decision for him at the moment he strapped it on. Firm enough to lift in meant too firm to sit through a clinic afternoon. Comfortable enough to wear all day meant not enough support when it actually mattered.

The fix turned out to be simple: put the pressure under the wearer’s control. Two air bladders, a hand pump and a release valve — add support for the lift, let it off when you sit down, without unstrapping anything.

yur brace is the result. It is designed the way a surgeon – and patients – would want it: adjustable in seconds, low-profile enough to wear under clothing and built to work with the stackable therapy pads coming soon.

Static braces apply the same pressure all day, yet pain changes as you sit, lift and sleep.

yur brace lets you add pressure where you want it – and release it when you don’t.

Comfortable, breathable, easy-to-secure and can be worn discretely under clothing.

10% of yur brace profits go to STEMM

Orthopedic care in Tanzania

Ten cents of every dollar goes to STEMM — Siouxland Tanzania Educational Medical Ministries — the organization Dr. Meyer founded in 1998 and has returned to more than sixty times.

STEMM’s surgical teams work out of Selian and ALMC hospitals in Arusha, and run outreach clinics in villages across northern Tanzania. The work is largely orthopedic: joint replacements, and corrective surgery for children born with limb deformities. In 2012 the team performed the first hip and knee replacements in the country’s history.

Tanzania has roughly one orthopedic surgeon for every million people. The United States has one for every nine thousand. So alongside operating, STEMM teaches — training Tanzanian physicians and nurses, and building an orthopedic institute at Selian so the care outlasts any visiting team.
